چکیده

Multitask learning has been applied successfully to a range of tasks, mostly morphosyntactic. However, little is known on when MTL works and whether there are data characteristics that help to determine its success. In this paper we evaluate a range of semantic sequence labeling tasks in a MTL setup. We examine different auxiliary tasks, amongst which a novel setup, and correlate their impact to datadependent conditions. Our results show that MTL is not always effective, significant improvements are obtained only for 1 out of 5 tasks. When successful, auxiliary tasks with compact and more uniform label distributions are preferable.

AcconPred: Predicting Solvent Accessibility and Contact Number Simultaneously by a Multitask Learning Framework under the Conditional Neural Fields Model

MOTIVATION The solvent accessibility of protein residues is one of the driving forces of protein folding, while the contact number of protein residues limits the possibilities of protein conformations. The de novo prediction of these properties from protein sequence is important for the study of protein structure and function. Although these two properties are certainly related with each other,...

Seismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task

In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...

Effective shared representations with Multitask Learning for Community Question Answering

An important asset of using Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for text applications is their ability to automatically engineer features. Unfortunately, DNNs usually require a lot of training data, especially for high-level semantic tasks such as community Question Answering (cQA). In this paper, we tackle the problem of data scarcity by learning the target DNN together with two auxiliary tasks in a m...

A Multitask Objective to Inject Lexical Contrast into Distributional Semantics

Distributional semantic models have trouble distinguishing strongly contrasting words (such as antonyms) from highly compatible ones (such as synonyms), because both kinds tend to occur in similar contexts in corpora. We introduce the multitask Lexical Contrast Model (mLCM), an extension of the effective Skip-gram method that optimizes semantic vectors on the joint tasks of predicting corpus co...
